My 1897 has no serial number...only the letters WRACO (which I assume stand for Winchester Repeating Arms Company) on the receiver where the serial number is usually found. It also has a steel butt plate (really soaks up recoil!). A good shotgun smith will have a 12 gauge chamber length gauge. It is a steel plug that is dropped in from chamber end and it has marks for, usually 2.75, 3 and sometimes 3.5 inch.
